TAORP is a community based non governmental charity organization that was founded in 2006 in the district of Jinja in Eastern Uganda with an aim of helping the high and increasing number of helpless orphans, youth and widows who were/are marginalized and living lives full of untold misery and suffering, as a result HIV/AIDS, extreme poverty and related effects on African rural communities.
HIV is a serious health/social and economic problem affecting women, men, youth and children. An estimated 40 million people are infected with HIV/AIDS, and since it was discovered has claimed more than 30 million lives worldwide.
Traditionally in many Ugandan communities, women account for the greater agricultural labor onto of their day-to-day childcare roles in the households. With HIV claiming many lives, especially household heads this has resulted in increased workload for the women therefore impacting negatively on economic production since women account for 70-80% of the labor force involved in agricultural production, the leading sector of the Ugandan economy.
Poverty, HIV/AIDS and its related effects have over the past deprived many children of a meaningful childhood.
The orphans especially are endangered, if there are no social support networks to ensure their survival, protection and upbringing they cannot attend school and they will not gain life support skills for their future. The country is in danger of losing out on a skilled workforce and the current trend in development may not be sustainable in the near future. The increasing number of street children is a testimony to the urgency of the situation of these orphans. A focus on the challenges of HIV/AIDS and its impact especially on women and children are essential and timely interventions.
TAORP has therefore considered the underlying causes for prolonged existence of such a scenario and formulated an integrated approach towards solving the problem.
These underlying causes included: HIV/AIDS and Stigma, Poverty, Illiteracy, Culture and gender imbalance, which have become a major springboard to stagnating development in Africa.
Against this background therefore, TAORP is contributing to the existing efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS and poverty through various programs.
